Career Fair and Toga Tuesday.

In the 3rd week of FSSP, I attended the Career's fair. I was unable to get the speaker's name because I was a bit late to this discussion or she didn't mention it at all. The career's fair was basically the same material covered during the time we went to the Counseling and Career building for that meeting about the different resources available for career, internships, and major options. Some of the site's that she introduced were GauchoLink, which I momentarily forget about until she began explaining about the benefits of it. She also gave out a Career Manuel that contained different options for careers, examples for resume's and other information. She did mention that we can always go to the Counseling and Career building if we ever need help on career options or mock internships/interviews.

I really did enjoy this meeting cause it actually really did help me realize the upcoming events that I will most likely come across on. For example internships, interviews, declaring of a major and my career option(s). I'm really grateful to have been part FSSP. It really did introduce a lot of new things that I was unaware of and it made my transition to UCSB much easier.

In addition, I also attended toga Tuesday. I didn't wear a toga cause I was to lazy to make one and I didn't one to take the sheets out of my bed hah. I went with a few of my friends and we just began socializing for a little while and got some of the food that they were offering. Unfortunately I didn't stay that long because I had a massive amount of homework that night. Nonetheless, it was great taking a small break from doing homework. Which I highly recommend to prevent major stress.

EOP Visit Week 6

On Monday of week 6 of FSSP, I decided to visit EOP to talk to them about my major, classes, and my career of choice. The representative that I was speaking was named Jorge and he helped with what type of classes I needed to take for fall to satisfy my requirements before graduation. He said that I was on track and that FSSP will help me get ahead in the courses that I need to take. Furthermore, I asked him about what major I should declare myself in order to satisfy my career of choice. Initially I wanted to major in molecular biology so I can fulfill my career of becoming a medical researcher. The first question he asked me was that what type of research I was looking into. I told him that there really isn't anything specific I want to work with. I told him that I would like to experiment on different diseases, for example, to find cures for them. As a result, he decided to use the search engine on the UCSB campus site and look for the different links that would help me determine my major when the time comes. While spending some time on the site, I was surprised about the different links that the website gave us.

Furthermore, he mentioned a different major that I've never heard of. Its known as Molecular Engineering and it's new major that UCSB opened. I will be looking more into that major and hopefully I'll have on in mind by the time Junio year comes.

Firesight Chats Week 5

On week 5 for FSSP, I visited the Fire Sight Chat meeting to receive credit for INT 95. After signing my name for the entrance, we were told that the speaker was unable to visit because she was sick, therefore Dr. Galluci decided to speak for her instead. With all do respect, it was extremely hard to hear him speak while I was attending the meeting. I was standing all the way in the back of the formal lounge and I had a lot of trouble hearing him while he was speaking. The only things I do recall him saying was that he attended UCLA and he majored in history. He's also been teaching in UCSB for about 12 years I believe and he's been coordinating FSSP for 8 years already.

The only time I actually heard him was when he was asking about the summer program. He was asking us if there needed to be any changes to make the program better or if it was fine as it was. Personally, I thought they program was well organized and the staff at the residence hall is great. Unfortunately I was unable to attend a lot of the activities due to the large amount of homework that I was given. Nonetheless, being part of FSSP was a great experience.

INT 95 Week 5 Blog

During INT 95 discussion, we discussed about any plans in regards to studying abroad in the upcoming years. Up to this point, I am still not sure if I want to take advantage of the opportunity. I would first like to see if I have enough money to travel abroad and I still need to do some research on some countries that I would enjoy visiting. A few people during discussion did say that they were interested in studying abroad but I don't remember where exactly they plan on traveling to.

After discussing our plans on studying abroad, my class and I went to South Hall to the EAP meeting. The meeting was actually very informative. I learned a lot about the advantages one can get from studying abroad. You can actually take an entire or entire year at the location of your interest and still get the units required for your major and graduation. Also, another thing you might consider is that you can actually study abroad during the summer. After Mayra, I believe that was her name, was done speaking, I decided to walk around the room and look at the different flyers they had. I decided to take flyers that contained information about sudy abroad program in Italy, Spain, Japan, and China.

Overall taking INT95 did help me became familiar with the different resources that our campus has to offer. I am positive that I will take advantage of a lot those resources. As of now I am starting to become accustomed to this new atmosphere. It is surely a complete transition from my high school experience back home. I am really hoping that a lot of you guys have a successful college and that all your goals and dreams will come true. Best of luck to each and everyone of you guys.

Dr Lubach's Presentation and Library Visit.

Friday of last week, my class and I went to a library meeting. The name of the presenter was Sally Weimer. She began by giving us to flyers that contained information on library location and research strategies. I felt as if this meeting was addition to the presentation of the librarian who presented on the 3rd week class of INT 95. Sally Weimer did talk about how the library is a big resource that will help us in our forthcoming years. She walked us through a website and showed us the different links that we can access in order to find specific sources such as articles, books, etc. She also showed how to access other links that will help us find sources that we can't find here on campus. The specific link to find sources outside our campus is through UC-elinks and we can also use EBSCO to search for online articles. The main website for library research for any kind of sources is www.library.ucsb.edu.


On Tuesday of last week, Dr. Lubach gave a presentation for the INT 95 4th week lecture. He began talking about how college students can be successful throughout their college career. He also mentioned that job interviews require to make a declaration to the interviewer, which I believe is great advice that we can refer to and ask questions about when applying for a job. He began explaining how college students can think critically. On the slide that he was presenting with, he presented a pyramid that contain a step by step order on how to think critically. The sequence was evaluation, analysis, application, comprehension, and knowledge. On the side of his wisdom, he was actually very hysterical and I actually enjoyed listening to his lecture. The ending of his lecture was made me look forward to the academic year. He concluded by stating that we as student's should trust the faculty. He advised to change this place for our benefit and for the benefit of the community. He recommended on expanding our academic and taking risks while we're here. And most importantly, enjoy and accept this place.

Lecture #3 and Career and Counseling visit

Last week, we had our third lecture of INT 95. Our guest speaker was a librarians name whose name I did not get. During the lecture that she gave us, I was sort of interested to here the different available sources that the library has in the event if we might need them. She helped me realize that librarians can also be a helpful resource when it comes to finding any of those resources. Also, she was helpful in the fact that she gave us an insight on how not the plagiarize because it may lead to consequences while we're here in college. She began speaking about her journey of becoming a librarian and that she has been part of the UC system ever since she had started undergrad school. Also, she mentioned that there are available job positions for working in the library which is something I might be considering.

Furthermore, during the INT 95 section on Friday, our class and I went to the college and career counseling building to attend the meeting that they had for us. There was someone who was speaking to us about the different sources that we are available to. She showed us how it was possible to obtain different booklets on career advice and major decisions that could help us along the years. She should us a website known as Gaucho link in which we are able to find jobs on campus. There will also be a job fair this fall in which at least 15 employers will at least be available for job sign-ups.

Overall, I thought that the Career and Counseling office was a good resource building along with the Student Resource Building. I am honestly going to take advantage of it throughout the years I am in UCSB.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of using another person's work as your own and not properly citing it in your words. Now that we have entered college, we are expected to revise and analyze other documents that, of course, contain their own work. A professor may tell us to use the required documents to support on argument on an essay. At one point, we may across a phrase tor text that is better worded than your own. We may be tempted to use that phrase into our own essay, but we forget to use proper citation of the Author's phrase. As a result, this will be referred as plagiarism.

There are a number of ways to avoid plagiarism when you feel the need to use another person's words to support an argument. One way may be simply by paraphrasing the words of the author into your own. This will show that you have used your time effectively to read and analyze the meaning behind what the author had mentioned in any texts that you have read. Another way that you may consider to avoid plagiarism is by simply quoting the phrase that you are borrowing from the author and stating the authors name.

In addition, when someone else decides to read your essay, they may ask who was the source of your argument. Citing your sources will also help strengthen you're trying to make a point in. If you are also constantly not citing another person's work and are simply using their work as you own, readers may assume that you lack intellectuality and critical thinking skills.

We are now college students and we are expected to think a critical level and a respectful manner. It is important that we cite another person's work to show respect. Remember that there are ways to always avoid plagiarism and by doing that, I honestly believe that your critical thinking skills and writing skills will develop along the way.

Major/Minor Fair and INT 95 2nd Section Summary.

Today was a really resourceful day due to the fact that today was he Major/Minor fair. I spoke to a few representatives who represented the College of Letters of Science and other who are part of the Department of Chemistry and biochemistry. I spoke with the individuals from the Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry because I was a little confused about the courses that I would take during the fall quarter of this year and the years coming. The name of the representative that I spoke with is Jennifer Ramirez  gave me some good information that really helped me understand where my major is positioned in the college of letters and science. That's what I thought until I spoke with another representative of the College and Letters and Science. The representative, who's name I did not get, told me some other information that kind of conflicted with Jennifer's. I am majoring in Molecular Biology and the representative of the College of Letters and Science told me that it depends on the field of study pertaining two my major specifically. Apparently there are two types of majors pertaining to Molecular Biology. One of them is Molecular Biology-Biochemistry and the other is just Molecular Biology. After speaking with her I decided to speak with an individual at the EOP table and she gave me a good summary of what the program is all about and why I should take advantage of it. Lastly I spoke with someone from the EAP table because I was curious about what the program is all about.

On Friday of last week, we met up with our TA for our 2nd section of our second week of FSSP. Our topic of the day was about resourcefulness. I believe that in order to be resourceful, I would first ask questions on how to receive or come in contact with the resources so I can effectively use them when necessary.  I know that that being resourceful throughout my years in college in order to become successful. After the small discussion, my class and I decided to go to the student resource center to explore the building so we can become aware of the resources they have. There are many programs her in UCSB that will truly benefit you throughout your college career.


Now that I've started the third week of my college career, I can honestly say that the only thing that's concerning me right now are midterms. Being successful is my main goal here in college and I am hoping that I will maintain that level of commitment throughout my years here in UCSB. I wish you guys luck in your midterms. I know you guys will do great!

A Little About Me

Hello everyone! My name is Giovanni Delgadillo and I am, as all of you are, a freshman at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I come from a small city in the Los Angeles County known as La Puente and I graduated from La Puente High School. During High school I was involved in extracurricular activities such as the DoSomething Club and the Virtual Science Challenge Program. I was also involved in sports such as Cross Country and Track and field. 

I decided to attend UC Santa Barbara because it was offering a lot of good amount of money, it’s a great institution for my major and its near the beach. Initially I wanted to attend UC San Diego because of the same reason and I thought that it would be a better school to choose over the other’s that I’ve applied to for my major but UC Santa Barbara is an exception. I am a pre-bio major but specifically majoring in molecular biology. My career of choice is becoming a medical scientist so I can help in finding cures for many other diseases that are a threat to human life. Overall, I enjoy learning about science.

I enjoy listening to music specifically bands from the 80’s. My variety of music is still quite short although I do love listening to what I listen to. Specifically I love listening to heavy metal bands such as Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, and black Sabbath. I do play guitar but I am still learning how to perfect my playing. I have never gone to concert but I am hoping that I get to see one of the bands that I've listed and others.

My time here in UC Santa Barbara has been pretty god so far. The campus is beautiful and I really enjoy the weather and the sight of the beach. I decided to do FSSP because I just wanted to get an early start for the transitioning to the fall quarter and I also wanted to get some of my General Ed’s finished. So far I haven’t really spoken to a lot of people yet because to be honest I am not really that social. However, once you get to know me you’ll realize I am an awesome person, I hope. I have met some new friends but I am willing to make new ones to.  I am really hoping that we’ll have some awesome years during our time here at UC Santa Barbara.

Lecture: 8/13

On the day of lecture, a guest speaker came to our lecture hall to give us a presentation about his career and accomplishments. The name of this individual is Stuart Smith. Stuart Smith is an archeologist who graduated from the University of California Berkeley, where he received his Bachelor’s degree, and graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he received both his Master’s degree and Doctorate’s degree in Archeology.  According to Dr. Smith, archeology is defined as context of historical objects. The job of archeologist, according to Dr. Stuart, is to “save lives.” This is done by carefully looking at context through the relationship of objects in space and time, which in general is the job of an archeologist.  To this day, Archeologists are still trying to ask question about the historical record because it is still not complete.

            Dr. Stuart Smith has traveled through Egypt, specifically Luxor where he studied and found some tombs that were dated back in 1400 BC.  He has gone to specific areas such as the cemeteries where he spent most of his career studying tombs and mummies. During his time in Egypt, he was able to learn their culture because of the living their for quite a while. He has flown hot air balloons in Southern Egypt and took many pictures of his grand adventure. Dr. Smith has gone to other location like Thebes. In Thebes, a lot of tombs are beautifully decorated which gave him of great interest and allowed him to do deep research on Ancient Egypt’s culture.

            Listening and learning about the many adventures that Dr. Stuart Smith has experienced inspired me to strive for success while I am here in the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has received his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees at two very highly known institutions. That truly reveals his passion for his major and his motivation to strive for success through higher education. I am honestly blessed to be part of this new community and I will do the best of my abilities to meet my own expectations to strive for success here in this University in order to fulfill my career just as Dr. Stuart Smith has done.
